Hey Lisa,

I used to think along similar lines to you when it came to advertising. But after recently listening to the I Love Marketing podcast, I have quickly come to change my mind. If you can run an ad that costs's you a dollar, and you can continually make more than that dollar, you would be mad not to keep doing it. The way I see it there are three major problem's when it comes to most businesses advertising.

1. They try to make the ad do to many things. An ad should be short and precise and only require the target to take an action like subscribe to listen to a free audio. An ad is only part of the sales process, not the whole box and dice.
2. The ad doesn't convey a CRYSTAL Clear message, so the target has no idea what they should do next after they read the ad.
3. They don't track the advertising so they have no idea whether it is actually creating or costing them money.

To me advertising (Whether paid or free) is essential for creating leads and cash flow, and it is also the quickest way to test what the market wants to buy, when you are creating new products.

awesome beanie, and yes it's up to me!! When you said budget for advertising what are your thoughts? I believe branding is essential and an investment which should not be skimped on but not too sure actual advertising is needed for all businesses.
